Job Description:
As the Prototype Machinist IV you will be working for JPL's Mechanical Fabrication and Test Section which maintains technical support facilities and resources that provide the services required to fabricate, assemble, and test electro-mechanical developmental and flight hardware. This Section develops and matures equipment and technologies, which enable and enhance our fabrication and environmental test capability for current and future missions. 
• Programming, setting up and operating a variety of machine tools such as CNC 3-5 axis Mills, CNC Lathes, Bridgeport Mills, Grinders, Jig Bores, etc. to fabricate metal or non-metallic parts, mechanisms, tools, etc. to exact tolerances and dimensions 
• Manufacture high tolerance precision parts as required on first or second shift 
• Meet approved estimates for machined work on a variety of projects and types of equipment 
• Work closely with shop leads, Manufacturing Engineers, and Cognizant Engineers to develop process plans and suggest methods to assist in the manufacturability of designs 
• Follow established work instructions

Required Skills:
• Typically requires a High School diploma with a minimum of 10 years of related experience or an Associate’s degree with a minimum of 6 years of related experience or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3 years of related experience and related required training 
• Must have extensive understanding, technical expertise and experience in the following areas: Fabricating high precision parts; programming, setup, and operation of shop equipment with extensive experience on FADALS with 5 axis capability, Bridgeports with EZ Track or Accu-Rite Millpower controls, Hardinge lathes, Mori-Seiki CNC Lathes with Fanuc controls, precision grinders, jig bore equipment; Makino 5 axis CNC mills and Makino 3 axis mills, extensive programming experience in 5 axis with CAM tools such as: Gibbs, Mastercam, Esprit, or Siemens NX; Blueprint reading and an in-depth awareness of (ASME Y14.5) Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (G,D,&T) and ability to inspect and be responsible for your own work is required, and an understanding of the behaviors and stresses of titanium and aluminum during material removal, machines to tight tolerances (ex .00005”) 
• Required to work 5/40 or 9/80 schedule as needed, work with the team, get along well and follow directions well, work independently in a safe, neat and organized manner 
• Performs complex and unique job functions and activities across broad scope 
• Frequently collaborates with engineers and scientists to develop or design required hardware 
• Acts as subject matter expert in Prototype Machining to all levels of personnel both inside and outside of JPL • Proficient with use of Coordinate Measure Machine (CMM) or Romer type arm to check own work and others in work group 
• Reviews requirements and helps to create process plans, procedures, methods, standards, and checklists • May serve as lead machinist, team leader or group leader 
• Use opportunities to learn advanced work techniques and identify ways to improve work techniques 
• Works with minimal supervision requiring no instructions on routine work or new assignments 
• Mentors and coaches less experienced personnel 
• Establishes and implements process improvements 
• Self-reviews routine and new work assignments for adequacy and accuracy 
• Develops machining modification processes on assembled flight critical and/or ESD hardware without the need for disassembly 
• Participates in hardware engineering design review to determine manufacturability 

Desired Skills:
• 10+ years prior JPL type experience (or similar) working with R&D, prototype and Flight hardware 
• 10+ years experiences as a CNC Machinist/programmer preferred 
• Leadership experience 
• Extensive understanding, technical expertise and programming/set-up experience in the following areas: Makino 5 axis mill, Makino 3 axis mill, FADAL 3-5 axis, Mori Seki lathes with live tooling, Bridgeport EZ Trak SX or DX, Bridgeport V2XT, EDM, extensive 3-5 axis programming experience with Mastercam, GIBBS, Esprit or Siemens NX
