Job Description:
•Conduct applied research in the areas of refractory opacified oxide aerogels, surface passivation coatings and their application to high temperature power generating thermoelectric devices to enable long life operation 
•Conduct basic and applied research in the areas of electrolysis and electrocatalysis, in particular integration of fundamental electrocatalytic processes into functional gas/liquid electrochemical in situ resource utilization (ISRU) devices for oxygen and fuel generation on Mars and other remote environments. 
•Conduct collaborative research efforts in developing advanced materials and components (e.g., membrane electrode assemblies) for electrochemical flow batteries and/or electrolysis cells, in particular as a potential emergency low temperature power source for Ocean Worlds surface missions. 
•Collaborate with academic and industry partners on existing programs

Required Skills:
•This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline, with 9 year of related experience at the undergraduate level, or Masters with 7 years of related experience, or Ph.D. with 5 years of related experience. 
•Successful candidates possess broad knowledge in materials science and engineering, have an extensive understanding and wide application of principles, theories, concepts and techniques in the field of advanced materials for application to energy conversion and sensing, electrochemistry and electrocatalysis, and extensive knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in the development, processing and performance modeling of complex materials systems. 
•Must have a track record on their ability to propose innovative concepts and lead small R&D projects, demonstrate their ability to publish research results in refereed journals, and display strong verbal and written communication skills, both informally and for formal presentations and review settings.

Desired Skills:
•Development of advanced materials, coatings and encapsulation materials for application to in-situ resource utilization systems and solid state device operation in extreme environments 
•Use and development of advanced inorganic materials synthesis techniques 
•Publishing in peer-reviewed open literature
