Job Description:
This unique opportunity is part of the Mechanical Systems Engineering, Fabrication and Test Division which engages in research, technology development, and the creation of advanced mechanical, thermal, propulsion, and electronic packaging systems with expertise that spans the full breath of mechanical disciplines and is applied from architectural concept development through operations.
As the Materials and Processes Engineer, you will be working for JPL's Propulsion, Thermal and Materials Engineering Section which provides leadership and unique world-class expertise in a wide range of technologies and technical discipline areas of chemical and electrical propulsion, thermal, materials, contamination control, analytical chemistry, geochemical instruments, physics-based modeling, and multiphase flow.

Your responsibilities include: 
•Support of advanced spacecraft projects, including design support, materials properties validation and general materials and processes support. 
•Support project meetings and reviews such as design team meetings and Monthly Management Reviews, assisting the lead materials and processes engineer. 
•Perform moderately complex job functions and activities within assigned area. 
•Work independently on day-to-day assignments under minor supervision; typically receiving general or detailed instructions on new assignments. 
•Use applicable policies, procedures and practices as guides to determine work methods and deliver results. 
•Provide work direction to other personnel or part-time students. 
•Some use of creativity and innovation. 
•Exercise judgment in applying applicable policies, procedures and practices to new situations to determine appropriate action. 
•Consult with others as needed. 
•Some interactions with customers from outside own organization. 
•Some contact with peers at other organizations outside JPL. 
•Participate on a team within own organization; may participate on a team outside own organization.

Required Skills:
•Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related technical discipline with 5 years of related experience; Master’s degree in similar disciplines with 7 years of related experience. 
•Experience in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering and electronics components, with an emphasis on printed wire board assemblies. 
•Must possess active SCI/SSBI security clearance. 
•Knowledge of industry and/or academic practices and standards across a range of applications related to materials identification, testing and characterization.

Desired Skills:
•Strong background on physics of materials outgassing and mitigation methods. 
•Relevant experience in the aerospace industry. 
•Knowledge of JPL policies and procedures, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations across a range of applications. 
•Ability to work with minimal supervision. 
•Previous experience generating reports and/or presentations related to testing and experimentation. 
•Experience interfacing with vendors, subcontractors, or University partners developing complex hardware, with space hardware preferred. 
•Very good working knowledge of Word, Power Point, Excel and other standard computer office tools.
