Job Description:
Are you a mechanical engineer with the ability to see the big picture of how many small mechanical systems can come together to do something amazing. We need someone to help as a Mechanical Systems Engineer on a spacecraft to explore Europa, an icy moon of Jupiter that may harbor life.
As a Mechanical Systems Engineer you will help define requirements and interfaces between various mechanical subsystems of a spacecraft. You will also help to define how we test our mechanical systems to ensure that they work as expected. The Mechanical Systems Engineers are the glue that connect the mechanical subsystems together and ensure that when they are combined at the system level, everything works as expected.

Some Challenges You Will Tackle: 
• Define and negotiate mechanical requirements for spacecraft mechanisms and structure 
• Define and negotiate interfaces between various subsystems 
• Develop a plan for Verification and Validation of the mechanical requirements at subsystem and system levels 
• Lead engineers and participate on teams in a collaborative environment to engineer, develop, and run configuration trades on the mechanical system of a project. 
• Interface with engineers, analysts, machine shop, and project staff.

Required Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with a minimum of 3 years of related experience; Master’s degree in similar discipline with a minimum of 1 years of related experience; or PhD in similar discipline. 
• Enthusiasm and a love for mechanical engineering 
• Wide-ranging experience and advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: mechanical systems including structures, configuration, mechanisms, structural analysis, and integration and test. 
• Ability to solve mechanical engineering problems, performs trade studies, and develops conceptual designs. 
• Extensive understanding and wide application of advanced principles, theories, concepts and techniques in solving mechanical engineering problems, performing trade studies, developing engineering requirements, designing piece-parts and mechanical systems, and providing oversight to the fabrication, assembly, and qualification of spacecraft flight hardware resulting in mission success. 
• A desire to work as part of a large team on extremely complex problems

Desired Skills:
• Practical experience with spaceflight hardware 
• Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) 
• Experience with the DOORS software for drafting and managing requirements 
• Knowledge of structural analysis, material selection, and mechanism design for spaceflight hardware
