Opportunity: This once in a galaxy opportunity is part of the Mechanical Structures and Articulation Group which is responsible for the design, development, and execution of mechanical hardware for the next generation of advance robotic spacecraft structures and mechanisms.
Some Challenges You Will Tackle:
•Provide engineering and analysis expertise to the pyrotechnic device delivery effort on multiple JPL flight projects.
•Support the development of the pyro-device and mechanical interfacing hardware.
•Support integration and testing activities for flight projects.
•Be responsible for the technical oversight, direction and execution of procurement activity of pyrotechnic devices.
•Provide pyrotechnic devices that meet the technical performance, cost, and schedule requirements of the project.
•Have responsibility for assuring the integrity of the devices from inception through delivery.
•Work with JPL’s lead Pyrotechnic Engineer to maintain the pyrotechnic engineering handbook and the pyro and separations technology database.
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 6 years of related experience; Master’s degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 4 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 2 years related experience.
•Advanced knowledge of pyrotechnic and pyromechanisms devices
•Ability to solve pyromechanical devices problems, perform trade studies, and develop conceptual designs.
•Extensive understanding and wide application of advanced principles, theories, concepts and techniques in engineering and fabrication of pyrotechnic devices used for separating, releasing, and cutting on spacecraft, satellite, or high reliability military applications.
•Advanced knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards across a range of applications related to pyrotechnic device engineering
•Proficient in the electrical and mechanical skills necessary to analyze the design inputs, document the resultant requirements, and oversee the fabrication or procurement of flight pyrotechnic devices.
•Project management experience in leading the scoping, costing, and scheduling of engineering products
•Experience with or solid understanding of non-pyrotechnic (non-explosive) alternatives for spacecraft, satellite, or high reliability military devices that separate, release, or cut.
