17 month contract position

Customer and contract specific training will be required and provided.
Will be a member of the Cryogenic Systems Engineering Group (382I) and will report to the Group Supervisor. Will be responsible for developing thermal and cryogenic subsystem architectures, designs and models of primarily space-based and airborne instruments and may include some ground based systems. Candidate will be responsible for the thermal design and analysis for the EMIT instrument scheduled to fly onboard the International Space Station.
Will be responsible for leading the design, thermal model development, analysis, testing of flight hardware, and model correlation. Will lead small thermal teams responsible for the thermal and cryogenic hardware subsystem deliveries and will include thermal hardware selection and
procurement, test planning and execution, assessing analytical results relative to requirements and recommend/make adjustments to the thermal control system accordingly.
Will conduct sub-assembly level preliminary and detailed thermal design reviews. Will implement designs, deliver thermal hardware including as-built documentation. Will present work in management and major technical design reviews as appropriate. Candidate will be expected to present their
work at design team meeting, technical peer-reviews, and project meetings.

•Level 3 thermal analyst position.
•Candidate must have thermal design and analysis experience of space instruments.
•Some knowledge and basic understanding of thermal systems designed for cryogenic operation. Basic understanding of passive and active cryogenic cooling systems for space use.
•Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 6 years of related experience; Masters degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 4 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 2 years related experience.
•Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Cryogenics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Systems Design, Control Theory.
•Extensive understanding and wide application of advanced principles, theories, concepts and techniques in heat transfer, thermal and cryogenic system design, analytical modeling practices.
•Experience with thermal control of flight instruments or spacecraft. Experience with the qualification of flight hardware for space. General understanding and application of orbital mechanics and space environments.
•Advanced knowledge of applicable Laboratory policies and procedures, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations.
•Proficiency in computer aided engineering tools such as Siemens NX Thermal and NX CAD/TMG, Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, TSS, SolidWorks, Labview, MATLAB or other scripting languages such as Python.
•Experience designing and implementing thermal control for space-based optical systems requiring milli-Kelvin thermal control.
•Security Clearance or the ability to obtain a clearance is desired.
