The suitable individual for this position will be an experienced Structural engineer that can work cross-discipline in Mechanical Engineering. Experience with large moveable structures would be a plus. Mechanical design is involved in all aspects of our group’swork, but these designs are integrated into a working moveable telecommunications structure with axes of rotation in both azimuth and elevation that articulate hundreds of thousands of pounds of steel and are exposed year round to the elements. The environmental impacts on these mechanisms are not insignificant and the impact of thermal, wind, periodic snow loads, diurnal solar effects are significant factors in the end performance on the large instruments (70m and 34m reflector apertures) which are expected to point with milli-degree accuracy throughout the year, on three different continents. Safety factors, often influenced by varying international standards must be considered. Knowledge of Structural Standards such as ASCE, ACI and AISC as well as Mechanical standards such as ASME and AWS are a plus in the considering a candidate for this position. Communication skills are critical in working with a team of individuals both here at JPL as well as our international partners. While our candidate is in the field overseeing implementations or here on Lab they will be expected to be able to work ‘back-of the envelope’ calculations for quick answers to urgent queries. The individual will also be developing and refining analytical FEA models to help with better characterizing antenna performance and troubleshooting anomalies. The proper individual will then of course be able to present findings and test results, and perhaps financial or schedule data to peers and or management when required.
We are a small group, performing big tasks, varied in scope and schedule. Members of the group exhibit various skills and support each other as needed, sometimes leading, sometimes supporting other members. Although we have specialty support of CAD designers, all in the group are capable SolidWorks modelers and often generate their own drawings. It is a hands-on group, with members directing work to the shop or outside vendors for fabrication requiring them to put together budgetary estimates and initiating purchase agreements and or Sub-contracts through JPL Acquisitions or buyers.

•Structural Engineer with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering and 5 to 8 years of Structural design and engineering experience; Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Structural and mechanical design, assembly, directing hardware fabrication, testing and installation.
•Understanding and application of Engineering principles, theories, concepts and techniques in design development and application of fabrication techniques for mechanical and structural systems.
•Perform trade studies, prepare load and stress studies, develop design requirements, work with fabrication, assembly, testing, qualification and root cause analysis of failures of hardware.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
•Proficient in tools such as NASTRAN, FEMAP, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Matlab and Excel.
•Structural Engineering PE certification or Mechanical PE certification, experience with the design and analysis of large moveable steel structures such as terrestrial antennas, telescopes, bridges or other large moveable mechanical devices.
•Proven ability to collaborate with and sometimes lead a team of engineers and designers to deliver the engineering products within schedule and budget.
•Ability to periodically present task plan status at monthly management reviews. Proven ability to oversee budgets and schedules.
