Job Description:
The Information Science Technician for the Library Services Desk is the first point of contact for JPL Library patrons. The JPL Library manages the Hub, a unique collaborative learning and event commons at JPL. The IST must be knowledgeable about JPL Library collections and services, adept at audiovisual support, and must provide excellent customer service at all times. Position responsibilities include:
• Provide first-level reference service, including but not limited to:
o Answering telephone calls and greeting walk-in patrons.
o Using the Library’s online catalog and web site to locate library resources.
o Assisting patrons in locating materials in person.
o Referring higher level research questions to other library staff as appropriate.
• Work with the Library’s Integrated Library System, including:
o Charging, renewing, and discharging of materials, and other standard circulation services.
o Creating and resetting of BEACON Express passwords.
o Performing document delivery and interlibrary loan operations when necessary.
• Library hourly and event census; Hourly headcount of library users, and attendance count at Hub events.
• Set-up and reset furniture and AV equipment for Hub events.
• Digitize audio and video materials, provide metadata, and upload them to JPLTube.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Required Skills:
• Must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder
• Offer contingent on ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screen
• Must be able to work full-time (with JPL’s 9/80 schedule) during the dates specified.
• Minimum of six months of library staff experience.
• Customer service experience.
• Must be able to lift between 25-50 lbs.
• Familiarity with at least one of the following: finding resources in library online catalogs, retrieving relevant journal articles from bibliographic
databases, navigating library web sites.
• Familiarity with email etiquette and MS Office applications.

Desired Skills:
• Experience with any integrated library system, especially circulation and interlibrary loan functions
• Library Technician Certificate, MLS/MLIS course work, or any formal Library or Information Science education
• Experience with digital AV formats and equipment.
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Team player and collaboration skills.
