Job Description:
Mechanical (Structural) Engineer IV, Antenna Mechanical and Structural Engineering Group, 333H Will:

• Be a member of the Antenna Mechanical & Structural Engineering Group (333H).
• Will be responsible for the configuration and design compliance of mechanical drive systems involving component upgrades required to due to obsolescence, parts availability or performance modifications. Also, the candidate will evaluate failure analysis reports and performance trends from data from DSN Station operations.
• Develop designs and hardware products that meet the technical performance, cost and schedule requirements of the Project. •Prepare and present designs, architecture and implementation plans at various design team meetings and reviews and answer questions about the designs presented.
• Prepare and release drawings.
• Interface with senior engineers from other JPL organizations and Projects on various tasks related to JPL flight projects.
• Partners with other engineers and project personnel to design and develop mechanical subsystem level architectures.
• Implements, delivers and infuses new technology including documentation of requirements, progress, and test results.
• Frequently interacts with other engineers or project personnel to perform cross-disciplines trade studies and analysis of alternatives through application of discipline-specific expertise.
• Work successfully with a diverse, international organizations and cultures with the DSN sphere of operations.
• Develops own CAD models and drawings and or directs others in the development of these products.
• Works independently on key projects and assignments with only limited direction, typically receiving only general instructions.
• Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives and institutional goals have been met.
• Failures to achieve results or decisions will likely have a substantial adverse impact on team or functional organization’s ability to achieve significant project objectives.
• Leads a team for a project activity, or function within scope of assigned responsibility.
• Regular use of creativity and innovation to address important issues.
• Exercises discretion and independent judgment in evaluating potential approaches and solutions to significant problems and determining appropriate resolutions.
• Interactions normally involve exchanging and validating comprehensive and analytical information.

Required Skills:
• Must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder
• Offer contingent on ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screen
• Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with typically 9 years of related experience; Masters in
Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with 7 years of related experience.
• Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Mechanical design, motion control and feedback systems, knowledge of fabrication methodologies, quality assurance processes and testing.
• Understanding and application of Engineering principles, theories, concepts and techniques in design development and application of fabrication techniques for mechanical and structural systems.
• Knowledge of trade studies, develop design requirements, report writing, qualification and root cause analysis of failures of hardware.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Matlab and Excel.

Desired Skills:
• Motion control system design experience related to complex mechanical systems such as large moveable antennas, spacecraft,  tooling or fixtures.
• Proven ability to collaborate with and periodically lead a team of engineers and designers to deliver engineering products within schedule and budget.
• Ability to periodically present task plan status at monthly management reviews.
• Experience with both mechanical systems and components of large steerable DSN antennas, including: hydraulic and electric drives, gearboxes, servo-hydraulic systems.
