Labor Category: Optical Engineer I

Job Description:
Develop advanced microscopes and microscopy techniques, including novel volumetric and 3D microscopy techniques, that are applicable to the search for life on other bodies within the solar system. Work is expected to include high resolution fluorescence microscopy, multi-wavelength lightfield microscopy for bacterial imaging, and integration of these types of microscopes with other optical instruments such as digital holographic microscopy. Tasks will include design, construction, optimization, test and performance and sensitivity analysis of these and other types of microscope, as well as techniques for data processing and analysis to determine whether acquired observations are indicative of the presence or absence of extant life. Field work may be involved in the latter step.

Required Skills:
• Must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder
• Offer contingent on ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screen
• PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field plus 4 or more years of experience
• Familiarity with the optical physics of forefront microscopy techniques
• Design and construction of lightfield microscopes for bacterial imaging
• Design and construction of high resolution (less than 1 micrometer) microscopes for fluorescent imaging of bacteria
• Hands on experience with advanced microscope assembly, operation, and debugging.
• Familiarity with quantitative phase imaging
• Error budget development and analysis for fluorescence imaging instruments
• Ability to interact with biological scientists to translate science requirements into instrument design requirements
• Image processing and analysis for scientific publication of biological experiments
• Ability to produce high quality refereed publications.
• Ability to present scientific results at conferences

Desired Skills:
• Holographic microscopy for micrometer scale imaging
• Bacterial cell culture
• Basic programming skill in python, C, or Matlab
