Roles and responsibilities

Perform precision measurement and characterization of EM and flight grade passive RF components such as filters, diplexers, waveguides, coax cables, switches at UHF, S-Band, X-Band and/or Ka-Band frequencies using Vector Network Analyzers and other commercial RF test equipment.
Perform characterization, operation and acceptance testing of RF electronics components such as transponders, two-way (half duplex or full-duplex) radios, filters, diplexers and TWTA’s in the UHF, S-Band, X-Band and Ka-Bands in support of flight and non-flight RF Telecom Subsystem implementation.
Perform specifying, architecting, designing, implementing, verifying, validating and operating rack-based Ground Support Equipment and Bench Checkout Equipment for flight and non-flight UHF, S-Band, X-Band and Ka-Band Telecommunications Subsystems and representative components therein (including radios, transponders, filters, switches, cables, etc). Includes specifying, acquiring, installing and operating advanced commercial RF test equipment for testing flight UHF, X-Band and Ka-Band telecom subsystems and/or components therein.
Perform integration and test of RF electronics that interface with flight and non-flight commercial lasers used in optical communications systems and/or flight instruments that use RF modulated lasers. Characterize optical fibers in the 700 nm wavelength range for transmission and reflection performance using commercial test equipment.
Perform post-launch (in-flight at Mars) operation of Telecommunications Subsystems at UHF and X-Band. Act as the Telecom Subsystem operations lead for both relay operations (Mars to orbit to Earth) and Direct-to-Earth (Mars orbit to Earth) for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Project. Prepare daily operational plans, review operational scripts, generate operational predictions for flight telecom equipment, review as-achieved daily telecom performance metrics against as-predicted metrics, Interface with the MRO flight operations team and represent the Telecom Subsystem at all Project events (including but not limited to daily operational planning meetings, operational readiness reviews, anomaly investigations, etc).
Bachelors + 10 years/Masters + 6 years in EE
Significant experience working in an RF and/or optical laboratory using test equipment such as Network Analyzers, Spectrum Analyzers, Power Meters, manual and/or automated test stations including modulation and/or RF protocol analyzers, etc
Moderate to significant experience working with flight Telecom components (RF and/or optical) and subsystems in pre-launch and/or post-launch configurations Moderate to significant experience writing, reviewing, implementing test and/or operational procedures for EM and flight (RF and/or optical) Telecom components and subsystems
