We are currently seeking Biologist to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

•Prepare large number of complex microbiological and tissue culture media and solutions.
•Research pertinent literature and evaluate and extract methods appropriate to combine chemicals and/or solutions.
•Evaluate experimental methods for accuracy and attainment of objectives.
•Assess product requests to determine the type and proper grouping of chemicals required for solubility and sub solutions, i.e., amino acids, vitamins, inorganic salts, etc.
•Assess whether the written formula requires expanding to cover the researcher’s request.
•Confer with scientific investigators to discuss any problems anticipated in the preparation of formula changes needed in the clarification and making of requests.
•Prepare stock solutions and choose method of storage (room temperature, refrigeration or freezing) of expensive, labile ingredients such as insulin, antibiotics, etc.
•Maintain detailed and easily accessible computerized records of orders in order to facili-tate trouble shooting and allocate costs.
•Provide regular printed summaries of production.
•Devise and provide computerized forms for investigators to request media.
•Prioritize media requests and fill orders in a timely fashion.
•Manage computer database of chemicals, biological, and other materials, and reorder new supplies in a timely fashion whenever necessary; prepare and submit procurement request using the media unit common account.
•Troubleshoot problems, determining when it is necessary to consult with supervisor to address incorrect acid-base balance, problems with water quality that impair microbial growth, batch-specific variations of chemical quality and media components that do not dissolve as expected or have impurities, and solid media that do not gel to the required consistency.
•Take reading of pH levels to determine what titration is required; if titration is needed, determine the method of altering the pH level, i.e., gasification or addition of reagents, in order to create a favorable living environment for cell or microorganisms; ensure sterile environment.
•Perform ball mill operations (grinding and mixing of chemicals) for large volumes of media, adhering to strict preparation details and control of preparation variables.
•Consult with staff to devise methods and techniques for production of bulk amounts of media for stock and for consolidating similar orders.
•Perform mathematical and chemical calculations to (1) convert molarities to gram weights (2) interconvert concentrations of hydrated and anhydrous chemicals using molecular weights and mathematics (3) determine the amount of trace elements needed for correct concentration in solution, using a combination of molecular weights and scientific notation.
•Record accurate and detailed information of work performed, i.e. (1) requisitions filled, (2) techniques and materials used (3) order of compounding formulas (4) sterilization procedures, etc., for use as reference and instructional guide for future operations.
•Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or a related discipline.
•Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a laboratory environment.
•Knowledge of development and preparation of specialized microbiological and tissue culture media.
•Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
•Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
•Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
