Job Description:
From design through launch, the System Safety Office works closely with projects to ensure the protection of personnel, flight-critical hardware and  facilities. As a System Safety Engineer, you will work closely with JPL projects providing support that includes technical advice and direction, hazard analyses, risk mitigation techniques and hazardous operations support, ensuring compliance with JPL, NASA, Range and launch site requirements, safety practices, standards and regulations.

As a System Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for the System Safety Program for one or more complex and critical projects in the following capacities:
• Provide system safety engineering expertise to JPL Projects to lead efficient and effective system safety programs
• Responsible for overall safety and hazard analysis for one or more highly complex projects
• Evaluate and assess hazards associated with hardware and software system design and operations
• Lead assigned project(s) in the implementation of appropriate mitigation techniques, safeguarding equipment, facilities, and the environment
• Provide coordination with JPL institutional organizations, NASA centers, and external organizations on system safety issues
• Prepare safety compliance documentation for the Project
• Be accountable for team results on all components of critical projects and assignments, including performance standards, budget and schedule
• Support floor operations during test and integration operations in capacity of System Safety oversight
• Oversee mishap/close call investigations
• Travel in support of projects, potentially including extended launch campaigns or other project support

Required Skills:
• The candidate must be a citizen of the United States of America
• Candidate must have a minimum of a Top Secret/SCI clearance
• A United States Government administered polygraph examination will be given to the selected candidate; he/she must pass it to maintain employment in this position
• Offer contingent on ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screen
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 9 years of related experience; Master’s  degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 7 years of related experience
• Wide-ranging experience and advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Design, testing, inspection, personnel certification/ recertification, maintenance, and use of lifting devices and equipment such as cranes, mobile cranes, hoists, manlifts.
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, theories, concepts and techniques in lifting devices and equipment design, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), Schematics and Engineering Drawings, Configuration Control, Repairs and re-rating of lifting devices and equipment.
• Working knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in OSHA, California OSHA and ASME, ANSI Codes, NASA Standards for lifting devices and equipment (e.g. overhead and gantry cranes, top running monorail, underhung, and jib cranes, mobile cranes, derricks, hoists, hydrasets, hooks and slings).
• Excellent interpersonal skills and work well in a team environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Desired Skills :
• A strong working knowledge of and experience with NASA, OSHA, CalOSHA, ASME, and ANSI regulatory compliance codes/standards.
• Capable of performing risk-based analysis on lifting devices and equipment.
• Continuous process improvement mindset.
